Coconut, the large round fruit of the coconut palm, has a hard, fibrous brown shell, a thin brown skin, and white flesh that is used fresh or dried, flaked or grated. Unsweetened and sweetened shredded coconut is available packaged. It will keep for months if stored airtight.

To toast coconut:
