Sunflower seeds are the small, long tan seeds from sunflower plants. They are sold encased in their black-and-white shells or already shelled. They are also available roasted, unsalted, or salted.

To toast sunflower seeds:
Place the seeds in a small, dry, heavy frying pan over moderate heat and stir until they are aromatic, 1-2 minutes. Cool slightly before using.
