Rub a whole nutmeg across the grating holes of a nutmeg grater. Work over a piece of waxed paper or a bowl to collect the grated spice. Packaged ground nutmeg is an acceptable substitute for fresh, but it won’t be as aromatic or flavorful.
Cook the meat until it is brown and the vegetables are tender, stirring with a wooden spoon to break the ground meat into little pieces.
Cream is added last to thicken and enrich the sauce. Pour it in while stirring to keep the cream from boiling over. Stir to blend thoroughly and cook a few minutes more to heat through.
