The syrup will glaze the pastry and also serve as a sauce for the dumplings. Make the syrup by heating water, sugar and spices in a saucepan; for a red tint, add food coloring. Remove from heat and stir in margarine or butter. Place the dumplings in a baking dish. Pour syrup over and around the dumplings, then bake.
