All you need is sugar, vinegar, a bit of butter, cream of tartar and the desire to get your hands on your candy to make this traditional pulled taffy from scratch.

INGREDIENTS (for 3 servings):

PREPARATION:

  • In a large saucepan over medium heat, combine sugar, vinegar, butter, cream of tartar and salt. Heat, without stirring, to 250 to 265 degrees F (121 to 129 degrees C), or until a small amount of syrup dropped into cold water forms a rigid ball. Remove from heat and let rest until cool enough to handle.
  • Pull taffy by stretching with hands, folding the candy over and repeating, until taffy is white and porous. Cut into 1 inch pieces with kitchen shears.
